Exelis Awarded $92M for Anti-Missile Electronic Jammer Systems

The electronic systems unit of Exelis has been awarded a $91.7 million contract to deliver 42 electronic jammer systems to the U.S. Navy for protecting aircraft from radar-guided missiles, Military & Aerospace Electronics reported Friday.

John Keller writes the Naval Air Systems Command at Patuxent River Naval Air Station, Md. contracted Exelis to build the AN/ALQ-214(V)4 set for the F/A-18C/D and F/A-18E/F Hornet and Super Hornet combat aircraft.

The open architecture jammer system is part of the integrated defensive electronic countermeasures system provided by Exelis’ joint venture with BAE Systems.

According to the report, the system uses radio frequency countermeasure techniques to jam the enemy missile launch and engagement while protecting the Navy’s aircraft from detection.

Work will occur in the U.S. through November 2016, Keller reports.
