Lockheed Martin and Electro Optic Systems have begun construction on a new facility in Australia that seeks to help government and industry satellite operators track and monitor orbital space debris objects.
The tracking facility will work to help prevent collisions of satellite payloads with debris objects in space, Lockheed said Tuesday.
The new site will house the Optical Space Services network that Lockheed and EOS established in 2014.
OSS is a network of sensors, optics and laser platforms that will work to track man-made space objects, supplement radar-based systems, predict debris movements and transmit data to satellite operators.
EOS CEO Ben Greene said the company and Lockheed expect to deploy OSS-related data and services late next year.
