Iridium Communications and Amazon Web Services are set to deploy a satellite cloud-based offering for internet-of-things users in September, Capacity Media reported Monday.

The partnership will utilize 66 satellites and AWS facilities to provide IoT coverage for 80 percent of the surface of the Earth unable to access cellular networks through Iridium’s CloudConnect service. Stationed 485 miles above Earth, the satellites occupy inclined orbits to enable a latency rate of 2.6 milliseconds and deliver complete coverage.

“Our partners are already planning for it. We’ll start seeing more applications go faster,” said Matt Desch, CEO at Iridium and a 2019 Wash100 winner.

Desch added the service will allow customers to plug Iridium-built antenna units into various systems including vehicle and inventory tools.
