The U.S. Marine Corps has asked industry to submit ideas on how to develop a weapons system that would hit targets at a range surpassing that of systems being used by organic infantry units.

USMC said Friday the OPF-M office expects to commence the development phase next year and wants the initial platform to consist of various subsystems such as a vehicle-launched loitering aerial munition, a digital command-and-control system and an aerial reconnaissance, surveillance and target acquisition technology.

The service will collect input to inform its strategy for procurement of a new weapon that can attack targets at a range of up to 62 miles, according to a FedBizOpps summary.

Interested firms should submit capability statements through March 1.

An industry day is scheduled to take place on March 13 and 14 at the University of Mary Washington.
