The U.S. Army has selected Leonardo DRS to demonstrate an electrical energy system designed to help the service branch meet vehicle power requirements.
The company said Tuesday it will test the On-Board Vehicle Power system on the Army’s Terminal High Altitude Area Defense vehicles designed for launcher vehicles and missile battery command and control.
Leonardo DRS expects the power system to allow air defense operators to access electricity directly from the power train of a vehicle.
Since 2008, the company has been developing the OBVP system, which underwent multiple military demonstrations such as the Army Expeditionary Warfare Experiment, Network Integration Evaluation and the U.S. Marine Corps Limited User Test.
Leonardo DRS and Allison Transmission will jointly work to deliver existing OBVP systems and develop a new variant of the technology that corresponds to the Allison 4500 SP transmission.
