Inmarsat has introduced a new international broadcast and automatic reception service for maritime safety information providers designed to help update the global maritime distress and safety system.
The SafetyNET IIÂ service for maritime safety information will help MSIP units migrate current communications capacities to web-based messaging, Inmarsat said Tuesday.
SafetyNET II was designed to provide broadcast scheduling, continual monitoring, message cancellation and multiple text input methods as well as other functions and usability updates that can support MSIP activities.
Inmarsat conducted exhaustive tests with six countries to evaluate SafetyNET II’s capacity to provide weather forecasts, navigational warnings and piracy alerts.
The new platform also helps modernize the infrastructure of the International Maritime Organization’s GMDSS system to boost search and rescue capacities.
Peter Broadhurst, senior vice president of safety and security at Inmarsat Maritime, said the company utilized direct input from MRCCs and MSI providers to develop and modify the final product.
