Shaun Bierweiler, vice president of public sector at Hortonworks, has said cultural shift is one of the factors that drive the evolution of big data storage.

Bierweiler told FedScoop in an interview published Tuesday that he observed data was previously used in a “transactional” manner but has now become crucial to decision-making.

“We like to say that every agency is a data agency, and that stems from the evolution and the significance that data has taken in the lives and in the missions of our customers,” Bierweiler added in the interview.

He noted that big data structure and volume has become “much more complex and complicated” and that users have higher expectations for data utilization.

Government agencies can address these changes in big data through the use of enterprise open source platforms, according to Bierweiler.
