general-dynamics-logo2A General Dynamics subsidiary has received a $23.6 million contract modification to develop a prototype unit for the U.S. Navy’s Ohio Replacement submarine.

General Dynamics Electric Boat will also design an air-conditioning unit and develop technical manuals for the new ballistic missile submarine under the modification, General Dynamics said Tuesday.

The award is part of a five-year, $2.5 billion contract that Electric Boat secured in December 2012 to research and develop a new nuclear submarine for the service branch.

Electric Boat is scheduled to start construction work on the new submarine in 2021.
