Steve Orrin, federal chief technologist of Intel, and Kevin Fiftal, civilian director of the technology firm’s federal team, have urged federal agencies to adopt trusted computing platforms to help secure geographically dispersed cloud data.
“Through trusted computing, administrators can verify the trust of the virtual infrastructure, identify the location of servers and audit for compliance with federal mandates,” Orrin and Fiftal wrote in a guest piece published Wednesday on GCN.
They also believe the technology can help agencies manage OpenStack deployments on premise or in cloud infrastructure.
Orrin and Fiftal said the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology developed a proof-of-concept “Trusted Geolocation in the Cloud” implementation guide with the goal of helping federal IT managers ensure that agency servers adhere to geographic restrictions.
Agencies need to identify trusted systems as well as drive a cultural shift in the workplace before they can implement a trusted computing initiative, the executive added.
