Northrop Grumman has developed a heater kit that may extend the endurance of a marine vessel’s navigational equipment under extreme climates.
“Ships operating in the Arctic environments are exposed to a number of unique risks and we recognize the need to ensure that our equipment is capable of functioning effectively under the challenges of polar operations,” Jeanne Usher, managing director at Northrop Grumman Sperry Marine, said Sept. 10.
Northrop indicated that the winterization field upgrade kits, which complement VisionMaster FT radar sensors, could allow turning units to work beyond temperatures below -67 degrees Fahrenheit and avoid accumulating ice.
The company said navigation equipment can be upgraded with the kit upon installation or in the field.
The winterization kit meets Russian Maritime Register of Shipping safety standards, it added.
