Raytheon has started work on additional components for the Missile Defense Agency’s Ballistic Missile Defense System radars.
MDA awarded the $53,252,500 contract modification in early September, the company said Thursday.
Under the contract, Raytheon will build two trailer-sized subcomponents that will be swapped with the AN/TPY-2 electronic and cooling equipment units currently in use and due for major reconditioning.
Dave Gulla, vice president of Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems global integrated sensors group, stressed the mobile X-band radar’s critical role in helping identify, monitor and prevent missile attacks from hitting national soil.
“The AN/TPY-2 ballistic missile defense radar is a strategic asset which helps protect the people and things that matter 24/7/365,” Gulla said.
Work will occur in Woburn, Massachusetts, through December 2016, according to the Pentagon announcement.
